At St. James, we value questions and exploration of faith with our youth—and how those questions show up and shape our everyday lives and experiences.
The Black Mountain Youth Initiative is a collaborative effort by St. James Episcopal and Black Mountain Presbyterian churches to support the spiritual development of youth in Black Mountain and the Swannanoa Valley. We affirm and celebrate LGBTQI+ youth.

St. James Ignite
Sunday afternoons
A time for fun, hanging out, and sometimes talking real. Laced with amazing outings and cool local guests—this is a space for kids to relax, build relationships with one another, and nurture the spirituality of their inner and outer lives. We’ll consider justice themes along the way, beginning with hunger, culminating in a hunger banquet that the youth organize for the parish.
The Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage
A pilgrimage on the Camino is a spiritual journey with people from all over the world walking an ancient route along the coast of Portugal to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This is the spiritual experience of a lifetime and serves as a transformative experience offering an opportunity for self-reflection, personal growth, and a deepening of one's faith while immersing oneself in a lived experience of faith and encounter with the humanity and the natural world.
All children and youth at St. James have the opportunity to attend Camp Henry in the summer, which is the Episcopal Camp run by the Diocese of Western North Carolina. Camp Henry is held at Lake Logan and is a fun time away from family where children and youth can explore faith, fun, and God’s creation in a beautiful setting. For scholarship information, contact the parish office.
WNC Diocese Youth Retreats
Our Youth are also encouraged to attend the Diocese of Western North Carolina’s Middle School and High School retreats—held at Camp Henry during the Fall and Spring. This is a chance for youth to experience fun and faith with you from other parishes in the Diocese.
